Ysgol Friars, Bangor, reviews the impact of MFL career speakers to boost take up

"David Binns has made a remarkable contribution to language education at Ysgol Friars through his highly engaging and thought-provoking talks to Year 9 pupils over the past two years.

His ability to re-frame the case for studying a language at GCSE, moving beyond the traditional focus on linguistic fluency to highlight the transferable skills, intercultural awareness, and genuine employability benefits that employers actively seek, has clearly resonated with students. The impact on pupil attitude has been encouraging: previously hesitant learners have left his sessions with a far more positive outlook on languages, and a growing number have gone on to opt for a language at Key Stage 4. At a time when post-Covid uptake remains a challenge across the sector, an increase in numbers over two years is a genuinely meaningful result, and one that David's intervention has directly influenced.

His talk to Year 10 two years ago has been equally impressive, with A level language numbers doubling thanks to his ability to inspire and motivate young people at a critical decision-making point in their education."

The Head of Languages at Ashville College, Harrogate, talks about MFL career speakers

Year 8 students were treated to a fascinating and inspiring talk this week from David Binns of MFL Insights on the importance of languages in today’s global world. Drawing on his own experiences in business, the military and international recruitment, David challenged the idea that English alone is enough for future careers in today's AI world

Students heard how language skills are increasingly valued across a huge range of industries, including STEM, aviation, engineering, marketing, technology and the armed forces. David explained that multinational companies moving into Yorkshire are actively seeking employees with French, Spanish and German, while major international employers such as Ubisoft, BP, Allianz, Volvo and M&S all place importance on multilingual staff.

One of the most memorable messages from the talk was David’s comparison of language learning to “a cheat code in a computer game”, helping applicants stand out in an increasingly competitive jobs market. He shared examples of apprenticeships and marketing roles where candidates with language qualifications were prioritised over hundreds of other applicants. Students were particularly surprised to hear that the UK loses an estimated £48 billion in trade every year due to a lack of language skills. David also highlighted the wider personal benefits of studying languages, explaining how they improve communication, confidence and cultural understanding. Stories about Premier League footballers, RAF drone pilots and global entrepreneurs demonstrated that languages can open doors in unexpected ways.

The talk was a powerful reminder that languages are not just useful for becoming a teacher or translator, but are an “eternal qualification” that can benefit students in whatever career path they choose. Thank you David - you are inspirational each year for our pupils and we greatly appreciate your time and efforts in spreading the message of the importance of languages for the future!

The powerful and lasting impact of MFL career talks at Bolton School Girls Division. The Talks continue at a pace around the UK

Good Evening, David,

We met last year on your visit to Bolton Girls School and your fame preceded you, having seen your talk to the year 12 German students at Manchester Grammar prior to that. Judith, with whom you had contact previously, is retiring in July and I shall be adding my original post of i/c French to my current post of i/c German and Head of Faculty. In our constant battle to get our girls to see the value of languages, one of our undoubted success stories has been our year 9 MFL Day and the girls were talking for weeks afterwards about your presentation. For that, we are eternally grateful.

We are really keen to repeat the day (and expand it to cover a whole school day) again next academic year and are aiming for another October date. Judith mentioned you were thinking of retiring (I am praying to every God I know of from RE lessons at school that this is just a rumour). Would you be available to inspire and enthuse next year 9 in a similar vein? I hope so and was wondering what dates you might have available in October? We have an idea of activities etc but, as our "keynote speaker", we plan to build the day around your availability.

Feeling both honoured and humbled by students of Northwood College for Girls (GDST), Middlesex

Today I was privileged to deliver an MFL Career Talk to the wonderful students of Northwood College for Girls. Both the staff and students were amazing and I delivered the MFL Careers Talk in the usual way. I must say that there were some really insightful questions from the students. This was followed by the usual round of applause at the end.

I was invited to have lunch at the school, what I really was not expecting was repeated and unprompted applause and cheering from the same students in the dining room.

I felt very humbled by this, but it did make me realise that young people are really engaging with my MFL message and see the benefit of a language in their future career, whatever that may be. So a big thank you to staff and students of Northwood College GDST

Speaking out at the Presidents Panel on the importance of MFL at the Language World 2026 Conference

As a Fellow of the Association for Language Learning, I was honored to speak with delegates regarding the success of my MFL career talks in boosting language enrollment during options time.

While my approach is unconventional and differs from many other speakers, I am proud to share the supporting data. Between September 2021 and March 2026, these sessions successfully convinced 16,106 students to opt for a language when they had previously not intended to do so.

Students at Trinity Academy St Edwards bombard MFL teachers with languages questions

Although a little bit shy during the talk, as soon as we went to lessons I was bombarded by lots of language related questions, certainly inspired an interest in MFL

Thanks David!

Parents of students at Jarrow School  are hearing the MFL message

Thank you so much for your talk - I've had lots of positive feedback from the students and staff who attended.

Clearly you had an impact as several of the parents I spoke to last night said that their child had come home talking about the talk, and you know how rarely teenagers actually share anything about what they've done in a school day! Also, I had a number of students saying they are going to choose Spanish as they know it will give them a better chance to earn more money so clearly the message sank in.

We won't know the full impact until the students have chosen their options but I really do sense that some that were on the fence about choosing to a language next year have now made a firm decision based on your talk so that's great news.

Students at Stanwell School in  Wales warm to a very entertaining yet important MFL message.

Y8 pupils were inspired by the very entertaining David Binns, retired CEO of the tech company, Sanako UK, about how vital foreign languages are for their futures. Some excellent questions asked. Merci, Danke, Diolch!

David explained that now he has retired from Sanako UK he can spend more time delivering  valuable MFL Career talks, which can only be a good thing for languages in general

We’ve got more awesome feedback from MFL teachers! This time it’s from Katharine Lady Berkeley’s School, Gloucestershire!

I wanted to email to express our deep gratitude to you for delivering such an inspirational and motivational presentation to our year 9 students yesterday. I sadly was not there as I was at a conference, but on my return to the office I was bombarded with positive feedback about how well the talk had landed with our students, and how brilliantly you delivered the key messages we need them to hear as they embark on their GCSE options process.

I am sure that we will see the enthusiasm they left with yesterday transpire into good take-up of languages for GCSE next year, and hopefully a few of those students will be inspired to continue their language studies beyond GCSE when the time comes. I would also like to get an early booking request in for next year if possible?

As these very impactful MFL Career talks continue around the UK, one school decided to gauge the impact on one class after a talk to a full year year group.
